WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
In the second half of the twentieth century, more than 200 new towns were built across Europe. Some were constructed alongside major industrial sites – nuclear power plants, mines, ports, or factories. Others were conceived as showcase projects during the Cold War, when Eastern and Western Europe stood in opposition to one another. Others were created to accommodate population growth and relieve pressure on major metropolitan areas.

Because of their relatively recent origins and rapid development, these towns are often perceived as places without history or identity. Yet, more than half a century later, they have acquired rich, multilayered histories that often remain unknown not only to outsiders but also to their own residents.

The exhibition “Unplanned Histories of Planned Cities”, presented in Lithuanian, English, and Russian, introduces sixteen new towns across Europe – including Visaginas – that share a common aspiration to reimagine their identities.
